According to creators DiMartino and Konietzko, Grey DeLisle won the role of Azula in the audition because, unlike the other voice actresses trying out for the part, DeLisle did not yell any of her lines. Based on what she read about the character, she felt that Azula was powerful enough that she didn't need to yell to establish her dominance.
