In the scene where Neil jumps off of the bridge, it parallels a nearly identical scene from It's a Wonderful Life (1946) in which George Bailey jumps off of a bridge and Clarence, as the angel, jumps off also. Clarence pretends that he can't swim so that George rescues him, just as Neil rescues Dennis the Dog.
