According to Ronald Shusett, part of Ridley Scott's pitch for directing the film was he wanted it to be "the most straight-forward, unpretentious, riveting thriller like Psycho (1960) or Rosemary's Baby (1968) or even the most brilliant B-level like Night of the Living Dead (1968) or Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974), but I want it to look, and I'm going to do this, like 2001." That was when Shusett knew Scott had the right frame of mind to capture the film as it needed.
