Like all of Paul Thomas Anderson's previous movies, this was shot on film. When the film was due to premiere at the New York Film Festival, there were reports that the Festival had provided Anderson his own personal projectionist, who repeatedly ran both film and digital versions of the movie for Anderson while he was choosing in which format to present the opening screening.
