The character of Lagertha only appears in the Danish 12th century history Gesta Danorum, which is the only major telling of Ragnar Lothbrok's life which does not feature Aslaug, or Kráka, who appears in the Icelandic 12th sagas Ragnars saga loðbrókar and Ragnarssona þáttr as well as the Scottish-Norwegian epic poem Krákumál. Ironicly the wife of Ragnar, which appears in every one of these accounts, Thora Town-Hart, does not appear at all in the series. However the character of Athelstan can be seen as an analog of sorts to Thora, who's death causes the depression which leads to Ragnar's downfall in Gesta Danorum.
