According to the film's production notes, ''manic depression is seen primarily as a medical condition resulting from abnormal brain chemistry. In most cases the illness can be treated successfully with drugs, among them lithium, but it is estimated that fewer than thirty percent of manic-depressives get or continue treatment. Many patients love the sense of euphoria and creativity they experience during their manic stages, and they think that the drugs make them feel 'flat'.''
