Marie Antoinette was perceived by her contemporaries as having "single-handedly ruined the national finances", and was even nicknamed "Madame Déficit". While her expenses were larger than what was expected, this perception is considered wrong by historians. One of France's main financial problems was that the taxation system was increasingly failing to cover the state's expenses. The two privileged classes (aristocracy and clergy) were exempt from certain taxes, despite their status as landowners and their reliance on other sources of revenue.
