Sergio Leone took the liberty of casting the voice actors for the film's original Italian dubbed version. He originally wanted Pino Colizzi - who had dubbed Robert De Niro in Il padrino - Parte II (1974) - to voice Noodles, but Colizzi suggested that Ferruccio Amendola, De Niro's primary dubber for such films as Novecento (1976) and Taxi Driver (1976), take the role instead. Due to rights issues, the Italian track on the DVD and Blu-ray of the theatrical version is a re-dubbed version created in 2003 (for this version, Noodle's voice was provided by Stefano De Sando, who became De Niro's primary dubber after Amendola's death in 2001), but the original dub was eventually restored and included on the home media releases of the Extended Director's Cut.
