According to a biography of Bette Davis, she wanted the part of Mildred in Schiavo d'amore (1934), so she took this role to be co-operative with studio boss Jack L. Warner. It worked, and Davis was loaned out to RKO for the film that made her a star. And, when Jack Warner heard about her performance, he elevated Davis to top billing in this film.
