Sergio Leone originally offered the role of Harmonica to Clint Eastwood, but he turned it down, as he was no longer interested in working for Leone. James Coburn was also approached for the role of Harmonica, but wanted too much money. Charles Bronson had previously turned down roles in Per un pugno di dollari (1964), Per qualche dollaro in più (1965), and Il buono, il brutto, il cattivo (1966).
