In the film, Massarde's toxic waste disposal plant, Fort Foureau, is combined with his gold mine slavery operation, Tebezza, despite being over 200 kilometers apart in the book. The river contamination, and the mysterious illness, are also never fully explained in the film, opting instead to get back to the CSS Texas Ironclad plot.
