Even though the population of Metru Nui seems to be in the tens of thousands judging by the Coliseum crowd shots, and the dialogue even says there are "thousands" of Matoran trapped in the pods, according to the official Bionicle storyline, there were only a total of 1000 Matoran denizens living in the city.
