The accident and cover-up symbolise the loss of innocence from childhood to adulthood. The protagonists are teenagers graduating from high school, and the plot takes place after they've spent a year trying to live as adults. Helen notably has become a Fallen Princess, Julie was once a straight-A student whose grades are slipping, and Barry was once the Big Man on Campus that ends up in hospital. The characters lamenting how they can't go back to how their lives were before the accident parallels how they can't become innocent again.
