Michael Mann describes how the burning rod works in the scene where Frank is testing it out. Magnesium rods are put inside of a pipe. When oxygen under pressure is sent through it, it heats up to between 8000-9000 degrees. Mann remarks that not only is the tool heavy, it essentially melts anything and everything it touches making filming and handling it on set extremely difficult.
