"Freaks" movie references! Just before the final scene in the film, as Bradley Cooper stumbles into the new carnival, he stops to speak to one of the carnival workers who then points him in the direction of the carnival's owner. The carnival worker that he talks to is made up to look very much like the "Pinhead" character from the 1932 film "Freaks" which is also about the rise and fall of a haughty and deceitful carnival performer. The film is notorious for casting the films carnival "freaks" with real life circus side show performers and people with real life disabilities. You can also see a period appropriate poster promoting the movie "Freaks" on the wall of the carnival owner's (Tim Blake Nelson) office/carriage.
