Before Chapman leaves Germany for the last time, news comes on the radio that Hitler is still alive after a failed assassination attempt. Baron Von Grunen later says to Chapman 'When the German army cannot even blow up one single room at a given time...We deserve to loose'. This is reference to 'Operation Valkyrie' where Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg hid a bomb in a briefcase and planted it in the same room as Hitler. The briefcase was moved at the last moment and a table leg protected Hitler from the blast.This implies that Von Grunen was part of the coup to kill Hitler (hence why he is shot), but also that he was protecting Chapman from the loyal Nazis.
