In an interview with Bryan Hirota, the VFX supervisor discussed the goal of making Kong convey emotion. With Jia and the reveal of the sign language between her and Kong, Hirota says, "You had to sell that he had a connection with this little girl." A big asset for showing how Kong is feeling was a detailed eye model. "Additionally, we dev'd out a very lifelike and high quality eye model for Kong. That's the thing that you look at to tell what somebody is thinking; the eyes do a lot of heavy lifting for any kind of creature."
