The theatrical cut ending was a re-shoot, enforced by the Weinsteins. The original ending saw all principal characters, including Laurie, killed off, which didn't go over well with them. To keep the possibility of yet another sequel open, Zombie was forced to re-shoot the ending where Laurie survives instead.
