"We don't promise you a rose garden" was U.S. Marines recruiting slogan used between late 1971 until mid-1984. Joanne Greenberg's source 1964's novel title phrase of the same name was slightly altered here and was often followed by the text of ''The marines are looking for a few good men'' which itself references a later movie as well [See: Codice d'onore (1992)]. The "Rose Garden" slogan was used in the first series of posters and ads that featured the tagline "The Marines are looking for a few good men." The 'Quote / Countquote' website states: ''Several posters in [the] series showed Marine Drill Instructors yelling at new recruits''.
