The movie was mastered with an artificially lowered white point (the brightest anything on screen can be), so for example the sun or a flashlight appears as a bright grey instead of white. This was subject to considerable criticism after the movie's release for making the movie hard to see. However, it was defended by the directors - who are professional special effects artists - as a necessary evil to make the effects appear convincing.
