Speaking of the aether, Odin says, "Their leader, Maleketh, made a weapon out of that darkness, it was called 'the aether'." Maleketh later says, "Your universe was never meant to be." The dark elves' universe predates (but was replaced by) the Marvel Cinematic Universe and these statements imply that Maleketh (possibly with other dark elves) created the aether and may have created all the Infinity Stones - perhaps they saw the MCU replacing their universe and tried, like Thanos, to destroy it. No one else in the MCU ever mentions this, which is no surprise. No one outside Asgard ever had contact with the dark elves and none would have any reason to know the true origin of the Infinity Stones.
