In real life, Chard and Bromhead were regarded as less than remarkable officers by their superiors. Chard, at 32, and Bromhead, at 33, were considered too old for the rather junior rank of Lieutenant. The defense of Rorke's Drift galvanized their careers; Chard was a Colonel when he died of cancer at 49, and Bromhead was a Major when he died of typhoid at 46.
