The film's time placement was inspired by writer/director Edgar Wright's obsession with the 1960s. Being born in 1974, he said "I feel you're always obsessed with the decade you just missed." When asking his parents for anecdotes about the 60s, his father stated that they had seen American musician Jimi Hendrix live, to which his mother shot him down, stating that they hadn't, but that they had actually seen Pink Floyd. When trying to get more out of the anecdote she stated that they weren't very good.
