Joaquin Phoenix decided midway through his second reading of the novel that he didn't want to understand too much of the book, so that he could better depict the confusion Doc finds himself mired in. Later, when Paul Thomas Anderson began to condense characters and reassign dialogue to other characters in the screenplay and during shooting, Phoenix became even more confused, and began to suspect that certain characters may secretly now be members of the Golden Fang in Anderson's version of the film. When he would ask his director about these suspicions, Anderson would reply, "I don't know man, you're just gonna have to figure it out."
