The rank structure of detectives in England (other than London) from lowest to highest: DC: Detective Constable. Equivalent to an American police detective. DS: Detective Sergeant. Equivalent to an American detective holding the same rank. DI: Detective Inspector. Equivalent to an American Detective Lieutenant, such as the one portrayed by Tom Sizemore on Robbery Homicide Division (2002). DCI: Detective Chief Inspector. Equivalent to an American Detective Captain, such as the one portrayed by Jamey Sheridan on Criminal Intent (2001). DSI: Detective Superintendent. Equivalent to an American senior management officer, such as a Major or Colonel, but not a Chief. DCS: Detective Chief Superintendent. Equivalent to the American senior commanding officer of a detective division. In the NYPD for example, this would be the Chief of Detectives.A detective of a given rank (eg Detective Sergeant) is no more or less senior than an ordinary policeman of the same rank (eg Sergeant).
