Following the mixed critical and audience reaction to the film, star Andrew Garfield revealed that they had started out with a wonderful script that underwent major rewrites and restructuring on studio orders during production. He mentioned that he was "heartbroken" about what had happened with the story and his character, because "[they] were not actually top of the priority list". Garfield didn't mention any names, only showing support for director Marc Webb. Composer James Horner also praised Webb, and confirmed that he passed on this sequel because producers Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach ignored Webb's input, and that Sony "just wanted action". The original script focused more on the relationship between Gwen Stacy and Peter Parker, Peter's orphan status, as well as the evolution of Max Dillon into the psychotic Electro and Harry Osborn's descent into madness. During production, at the behest of Sony studios, the story underwent a major overhaul that removed parts from it that they felt didn't work, and introduced a number of additional characters from the Spider-Man mythos, including Rhino, Black Cat, Dr. Kafka, with allusions to Mysterio, Vulture, Dr. Octopus, and Kraven the Hunter, among others with the hopes of creating a line of spin-off films. For his part, Garfield himself expressed his own disappointment at the deviation from the original story.
