Sonia Orwell, George Orwell's widow, signed the contract to allow this movie to be made on December 1, 1980 while in the hospital. Nine days later, she died. She had originally wanted to have full artistic control over the production, but in the end relinquished this when she agreed to the terms and conditions of the contract and signed it.
