Steven Moffat said that he originally planned to cast an older actor for the Eleventh Doctor. He had also previously said: "For Doctor Who to turn into an old man you'd be pissed off. Even William Hartnell had trouble back then, he was often ill and he forgot his lines. I think the Doctor will always be about forty." As executive producer, he then went against his own theory by casting the youngest Doctor ever (26-year-old Smith) and the oldest since Hartnell (55-year-old Capaldi).
