The characters in the movie share many similarities with Dante Alighieri's Inferno. Both enter into Hell, both traverse the Nine Circles of Hell, both see sinners punished according to their sins, both escape Hell through a portal where gravity is reversed, and in some instances, the dialogue of the group is the same of Dante's guide, Virgil.
