Joe E. Brown was a true baseball fan, and this was the first of his "baseball trilogy" - the other two films being Elmer, the Great (1933) and Alibi Ike (1935). He passed along his love of baseball to his son Joe L. Brown, who was the general manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1955 to 1976, winning two World Series championships in 1960 and 1971.
