Until 1791, Marie Antoinette could rely on the support of moderate leaders of the French Revolution who were willing to collaborate with her. The Flight to Varennes (June 1791), a failed escape of the royal family, backfired. It discredited Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette in the eyes of the public, and also helped to undermine their political supporters. In 1792, the decline of the Revolution's moderate faction allowed the rise to power of the anti-monarchist Jacobins.
