Though not explicitly stated, it is hinted that this universe's Splinter mutated from a rat rather than a human. The indication of this is seen when Shredder loses his mask during the final fight with Batman. There is a scar on the left side of his face, reminiscent of the scar that his counterpart received from Splinter after he murdered Hamato Yoshi in the live action movies.
