In the Extended Edition during the attack on Dol Guldor Fortress to rescue Gandalf, Sauron orders an Orc lieutenant to bring him the Elven Ring of Fire, which Gandalf is surprised to find on his person. No explanation has been given as to how Gandalf in the movie universe is in possession of one of Three Rings for the Elves. In the novels, Narya was given to Gandalf by Cirdan the Shipwright, lord of the Grey Havens, when he arrives from Aman early in the Third Age. Cirdan foresaw that Gandalf would have need of it, to sustain himself and to ignite the fire of spirit in the Free People to resist Sauron.
