Dana Carvey wanted a specific rhythm to Devlin's farts. He explained, "The studio wanted to go fart and then just cut. I said, no, no, no. The laugh is in the fact that it's just still silence". In test screenings, those scenes got a laugh because of the long awkward silence after the fart.
