While most sources state that Freddie Mercury first learned he was HIV-positive in 1987, reporter and long-time friend David Wigg, who knew him for 16 years, stated in a 2011 Dailymail article that Freddie knew about his diagnosis seven years prior to his death, making 1984 the year when he got the bad news.
