By loving her patient physically as well as emotionally, Libbie (Lena Olin) violates her professional trust and risks destroying her career. By loving Libbie and allowing her to help him, Mr. Jones (Richard Gere) risks losing the ecstatic sense of freedom and creativity that he cherishes as part of his condition. Director Mike Figgis said: "This is a film about two people who cross barriers, break conventions, all because of an overpowering love.
