In the novelization, Nathan provides a complex explanation of why they have to find a specific focal point in the Hollow Earth's energy mineral (which turns out to be in the temple made by Kong's ancestors) to harvest and analyze it successfully, and they can't just use any of the deposits that are visible on the mountain earlier in the film.
