It proves that Jean-Jacques Annaud probably wanted real penetration in the scene, but that Vargas didn't agree. In an interview with Cosmopolitan, Slater said that during that scene he thought that "they were waiting for me to get an erection. They wanted to see the consummation. But there was no way. I couldn't perform while the camera was rolling."
