It's well-known that the ill-fitting one-piece jumpsuits that served as the Starfleet uniform for all characters in season one was phased out in later years. What's a little less well-known is that the women's uniforms continued to be a single piece, whereas the men had separate tunics and trousers that matched up in the midsection. What's even less well-known is that Gates McFadden had a custom two-piece uniform made for herself that was very similar to the other women's uniforms but was actually much easier for her to wear. There's a difference in it apparent to the viewer, too - it's a slightly different shade of blue from the standard sciences division uniforms (this is probably most easily seen in "Remember Me" when she shares scenes with Bill Erwin's character, who wears the standard uniform).
