When the show debuted, the Los Angeles Times review said Mr. Sheffield should've been more careful to hire Fran without any references as it could've turned into La mano sulla culla (1992) (a movie about a woman who becomes a nanny to infiltrate and destroy a woman's life as she did hers). Madeline Zima who plays Gracie actually starred in that movie as the daughter as well. Later in the series Maxwell admits he did an FBI background check on her. He says the only thing the FBI couldn't determine was her actual age.
