Lansbury already had a familiarity in the murder mystery genre as she acted in two film adaptations of Agatha Christie's novels Assassinio sul Nilo (1978) and Assassinio allo specchio (1980), the latter film where she played the famous sleuth Miss Jane Marple. Thus, the audience was more than willing to accept her as Jessica Fletcher.
