Generally held to be one of the few films in the long and fiery career of director Otto Preminger to have been a smooth and largely harmonious experience for all concerned, with hardly any of the explosive displays of temper for which Preminger was notorious. The soothing influence of leading man James Stewart was said to be a key factor in the relative tranquility of filming. Stewart praised Preminger's skill in many interviews and said, near the end of his career, that he regretted not having made more films with him.
