John Frankenheimer and James Wong Howe used a technique of mounting their camera on an actor with a rigid harness for the opening scene and the drug induced nightmare sequence. This technique was adapted by many cinematographers and directors, most notably by John Landis's in The Blues Brothers, Martin Scorsese in Mean Streets, Darren Aronofsky in Requiem for a Dream, and Spike Lee in nearly every movie he directed.
