Mozart was christened Joannes Chrystostomus Wolfgangus Theophilus Mozart. The first two names, according to the custom of the times, were his Saint's names (he was christened on the feast of St John Chrysostom). Wolfgangus was a Latinised version of Wolfgang, the name by which he was known by his family. Theophilus was the middle name of his godfather, Joannes Pergmayr.Theophilus is Greek in origin, and can mean either Lover of God or Loved by God. The German translation of this is Gottlieb, and a letter from Mozart's father survives in which he calls his new-born son Wolfgang Gottlieb. The Latin version of Theophilus is Amadeus. Mozart himself preferred the French version, Amade. He sometimes joking signed his name Wolfgangus Amadeus Mozartus, but never Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
