This film has helped lead to a widespread view that Field Marshal Montgomery was to blame for the failure of Operation Market Garden. Montgomery had designed the original plan for the operation, but it was then radically changed by the Americans. Some historians have argued it was Lieuutenant General Gavin's inability to reach his objectives that was to blame for the failure of Market Garden.
