When referencing the H.A.L. 9000 computer, the Mission Control voice speaks the digit "nine" as "niner." This is copied from standard language used by airplane pilots and air traffic controllers to communicate with each other, in which the English number "nine" is pronounced "niner" so it won't be confused with the German word "nein," meaning "no." More importantly, the term "niner" differentiates from the spoken number "five."
