More than once we are shown a movie poster for John Carpenter's La cosa (1982) on a wall in Mike's (Finn Wolfhard) basement. We also see a scene of that same movie being watched by Mike's science teacher at his home in a later episode. The creature's head in Stranger Things has similarities to the creature in The Thing.
