Zilla, the monster that appears in Sydney and loses to Godzilla in a short battle was a direct parody of the American Godzilla from the Sony-TriStar film Godzilla (1998). However, despite a very persistent misconception, the two monsters are legally not the same. Although the two are virtually the same, the 1998 movie's monster is still officially called Godzilla, while Zilla is a separate character. The name came about because, according to former series producer Shogo Tomiyama, the 1998 movie "took the 'God' out of 'Godzilla'" through its portrayal of the monster. Since the release of the film, Zilla has appeared in other media licensed by Toho, including comic series and a mobile game, and is now considered to be an honorary member of Toho's roster of kaiju. Due to unalterable legal agreements between Toho and Siny-TriStar, media and merchandise related to the 1998 film still acknowledges the monster's name as Godzilla.
