The role of Emily was originally supposed to be the age of ten and Anna Chlumsky of Papà , ho trovato un amico (1991) and Veep - Vicepresidente Incompetente (2012) fame had auditioned for the part. Writer John Hughes had previously worked with Chlumsky in Io e zio Buck (1989) and due to the then recent success of Papà , ho trovato un amico (1991) lobbied hard to get her the part but producer Ivan Reitman ultimately vetoed Chlumsky's casting because she was only one year younger than Christopher Castile who plays Ted and he felt there needed to be more of an age gap between the kids in the film. Emily was then written to be around five or six years old and Ivan Reitman insisted on casting Sarah Rose Karr whom he had directed in Un poliziotto alle elementari (1990) due to his positive success working with the young actress on that film.
