Bette Midler turned down the role of Annie Wilkes in this movie in order to co-star with Woody Allen in Paul Mazursky's Scenes from a Mall (1991). That film made a small profit considering its low budget but was seen overall as a critical and financial failure whereas this movie was a box office and critical success, with Kathy Bates winning an Oscar for her portrayal of Wilkes and is now regarded as one of the best psychological horror films ever made.
